WEATHER Here is the weather forecast for this week, as of Sunday, October 11 at 1 p.m. Eastern Time. As always, this is subject to change. There is a proverb about weather: “If you don’t like the weather, wait a few minutes” – and nowhere is this more true than here in the Washington metropolitan area. Wednesday, October 14: 35 percent chance of, 65-84 degrees F (18-29 degrees C) Thursday, October 15: 45 percent chance of rain, 60-72 degrees F (15.5-22 degrees C) Friday, October 16: 70 percent chance of rain; 55-70 degrees F (13-21 degrees C) Saturday, October 17: sunny, 43-58 degrees F (6-14.5 degrees F) Sunday, October 18: sunny, 39-62 degrees F (4-17 degrees F) Check your own weather app for updates. Plan accordingly: jackets, vests, rain gear, umbrellas. GROUND TRANSPORTATION Union Station If you are arriving at Union Station by train, there is a shuttle bus to Gallaudet. Take the escalator up to the Greyhound/Tour Bus Parking Level. The shuttle location area is immediately to the left once you exit the escalator. There is Gallaudet University Shuttle signage, space #50. The shuttle schedule is at this link. You can also take taxicabs or rideshares (Uber, Lyft, etc.). These depart from the front of the station. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) The easiest way to get to campus from DCA is via Metrorail. The Metro system map is at this link. Take the Blue Line to Metro Center, then transfer to the Red Line toward Glenmont and get off at Union Station, where you can get the Gallaudet shuttle bus, or NoMa-Gallaudet U, from where you can walk to campus. It’s a straight shot up M Street NE to Florida Avenue NE, about a 15-minute walk. or Take the Yellow Line to Gallery Place, then transfer to the Red Line toward Glenmont and get off at Union Station, where you can get the Gallaudet shuttle bus, or NoMa-Gallaudet U, from where you can walk to campus. It’s a straight shot up M Street NE to Florida Avenue NE, about a 15-minute walk. You can also take taxicabs or rideshares (Uber, Lyft, etc.); these depart from the front of your terminal. Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport (BWI) You can take Amtrak or MARC Penn Line trains from BWI to Union Station, then the Gallaudet shuttle bus. Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) The easiest way to get to campus from IAD is via Metrorail. The Metro system map is at this link. PARKING Parking on campus is free, period. The Kellogg Conference Hotel normally charges $40 per night, but this is not in effect during Homecoming. If anyone tries to tell you otherwise, please let any member of the reunion committee know, and we will address it. REUNION REGISTRATIO Reunion registration is on Wednesday, October 14 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Kellogg Conference Hotel lobby. Pick up your registration badge, your reunion packet, and your memory book and vest if you ordered either or both. KELLOGG CONFERENCE HOTEL This information is for reunion attendees and guests who are staying at the Kellogg Conference Hotel. Check-in Kellogg Conference Hotel check-in is at 4:00 p.m. If you arrive before this time – and most of you will – you could check to see if your room is ready. If it is not, the hotel will gladly store your bags for you. Check-out Kellogg Conference Hotel check-out is at 11:00 a.m. Amenities The hotel has an exercise room on the fifth floor. It is open 24/7; use your room key card for access. There is a small nook off the lobby with snacks, hot and cold drinks, and toiletries for purchase, also open 24/7. Breakfast The Kellogg Conference Hotel provides complimentary breakfast for all reunion attendees and their guests who are staying at the hotel only. If you are not staying at the hotel, you may purchase breakfast each day. EXERCISE AND SWIMMING The Gallaudet University Field House has a fitness center and an indoor swimming pool. Both will be open to alumni when not in use by classes or sports teams. Bring your driver’s license or other government ID. You can also walk or run on the Thomas O. Berg, ’44 & H-’97 Track, or anywhere else on or off campus. ON-CAMPUS DINING OPTIONS Reunion attendees and their guests have multiple on-campus dining options, including the MarketPlace and the Rathskellar on the lower level of the I. King Jordan Student Academic Center, the Java Corner (Starbucks kiosk) on the first floor of the I. King Jordan Student Academic Center, and the Hanson Plaza Dining Hall. Hours for each are posted at this link. Mozzeria, the widely-acclaimed Deaf-owned and operated pizzeria, just opened in The MarketPlace. Check it out while you are here! OFF-CAMPUS DINING OPTIONS There are numerous places to eat off campus, including 100-year-old A. Litteri, the go-to for subs and Italian delicacies during our college days; and Union Market, with both kiosks and sit-down spaces, including Deaf-owned-and-operated Crepe Crazy. The surrounding area, NoMa and H Street NE, has even more places to eat. There is something for everyone! ATTIRE For most of the weekend, you can dress casually. Keep in mind the weather and dress accordingly. There are several events for which we ask you to wear specific attire. These events are listed below. Alumni Emeriti Club Ceremony Thursday, October 15, 2 p.m. Kellogg Conference Hotel, Swindells Auditorium This is a ceremonial event, at which each of you will receive a medallion from Gallaudet University President Roberta J. Cordano. Please dress up! If you are not able to attend the Alumni Emeriti Club Ceremony for any reason, text Bob Weinstock at 301-642-0338. We will make arrangements for you to receive your medallion during the Golden Anniversary Luncheon on Friday, October 16. Once you have received your medallion, wear it with pride throughout the weekend! Class Photograph Friday, October 16, 8:30 a.m. Chapel Hall Steps It goes without saying: BE ON TIME FOR THE CLASS PHOTO! Wear your red, white, and blue class jersey; your Silver Anniversary Reunion denim shirt; or a white shirt with your new Golden Anniversary vest if you ordered one. If you did not order a vest, wear your class jersey, your denim shirt, or a white shirt. If you have none of these, wear Gallaudet apparel. (You can purchase Gallaudet apparel in the Bison Shop in the I. King Jordan Student Academic Center if need be.) No matter what you decide to wear, be sure to wear your medallion! Golden Anniversary Luncheon Friday, October 16, 11:30 a.m. Peikoff Alumni House (“Ole Jim”), upper level Please dress up! Be sure to wear your medallion. Pep Rally Friday, October 16, 7:30 p.m. Hotchkiss Field (Field House if it is raining) Wear Class of 1976 apparel – your red, white, and blue class jersey or your Silver Anniversary Reunion denim shirt. Wear your new Golden Anniversary vest if you ordered one. If you do not have a jersey or denim shirt, wear Gallaudet apparel. (You can purchase apparel in the Bison Shop in the I. King Jordan Student Academic Center if need be.) And once again, wear your medallion! Madeleine Davis-Shelton and Yvonne Davis-Talley will be our emcees; Lynn Jacobowitz and Charles Harbison will lead our trivia competition; and Ed Chevy, Steve Longo, and Micaela Paulone will perform in Beethoven’s Nightmare’s grand finale! We will also have a 50/50 drawing. Please dress up, and yes, once again, wear your medallion! APPRECIATION We thank the Office of Alumni Relations for its support of our reunion! Greta Wolcott, ’21, has been our liaison, and she has been unfailingly (and amazingly) responsive to our needs. Rebecca Rydstrom, ’02; Abby Drake, ’97 & G-’99; Mary Dall, ’82; a large corps of volunteers coordinated by Janet Weinstock, ’78 & G-’81 and Wendy Wiatrowski, ’01 & G-’03; and the golf cart team led by Robin Massey, ’86 and Hyman Russo, E-’83.
